چکیده

The Common Sense project is developing mobile environmental sensing platforms to support grassroots community action. To this end, we are building a family of hardware and software components that can be used in a range of applications, as well as developing new communication paradigms that enable communities of nonexperts to gather and produce information that is “credible enough” for experts and policy-makers. The demonstration showcases one such platform, currently deployed on streetsweeping vehicles in a major U.S. city.

Common Sense Community: Scaffolding Mobile Sensing and Analysis for Novice Users

As sensing technologies become increasingly distributed and democratized, citizens and novice users are becoming responsible for the kinds of data collection and analysis that have traditionally been the purview of professional scientists and analysts. Leveraging this citizen engagement effectively, however, requires not only tools for sensing and data collection but also mechanisms for underst...

Citizen Bio-Optical Observations from Coast- and Ocean and Their Compatibility with Ocean Colour Satellite Measurements

Marine processes are observed with sensors from both the ground and space over large spatio-temporal scales. Citizen-based contributions can fill observational gaps and increase environmental stewardship amongst the public. For this purpose, tools and methods for citizen science need to (1) complement existing datasets; and (2) be affordable, while appealing to different user and developer grou...

Design Guidelines for the User-Centred Collaborative Citizen Science Platforms

Online Citizen Science platforms are good examples of socio-technical systems where technology-enabled interactions occur between scientists and the general public (volunteers). Citizen Science platforms usually host multiple Citizen Science projects, and allow volunteers to choose the ones to participate in. Recent work in the area has demonstrated a positive feedback loop between participatio...

Participatory noise mapping works! An evaluation of participatory sensing as an alternative to standard techniques for environmental monitoring

Participatory sensing enables a person-centric collection of environmental measurement datawith, in principle, high granularity in space and time. In this paperweprovide concrete proof that participatory techniques, when implemented properly, can achieve the same accuracy as standard noise mapping techniques. We do this through a citizen science experiment for noise mapping a 1 km2 area in the ...

Proc. of the 3rd Annual Conference of Research@Locate (R@Loc'16), Melbourne, Australia, 12–14th April

Citizen science has a significant contribution to Natural Resource Management (NRM) through the acquisition and sharing of knowledge. Innovative online technology is playing an increasing role in the support and implementation of citizen science activities. Two projects being conducted in Victoria are using web-based spatial applications to facilitate and support the use of community sourced in...
